A trio of martial-arts pros from Brazil face charges they beat one man into a coma and broke another man's jaw during a fight outside a Chelsea restaurant early this morning.
Bruno DaCosta, 23, of Everett, Iury Debs, 25, of Lynn, and Diego Santos, 23, of Everett, were all ordered to surrender their passports at their arraignment today in Chelsea District Court, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says. Bail was set at $2,500 each.
All three are instructors at the Brazilian Martial Arts Center in Somerville, which promises "ultimate training for ultimate fighters."
Prosecutors charge the three put their training to bad use at a fight outside the McDonald's on Revere Beach Parkway, which they say followed a verbal altercation shortly before at Club Lido in Revere.
Witnesses told investigators that Santos struck one of the victims, a 22-year-old Revere man, in the face with no provocation, knocking him to the ground. When another man, also a Revere resident, approached the assailants, Debs allegedly punched him in the back of the head and knocked him to the ground. All three assailants kicked and slapped the two victims as they lay on the ground.
Friends of the first victim rushed him to Whidden Memorial Hospital, where doctors ordered him transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for surgery. He was operated upon and placed in an intensive care unit with severe head trauma and possible brain damage.
