Surge in violence among black teens in Boston

The good news is violence is still nowhere near the levels of the crack-fueled early 1990s. The bad news, according to this report by Northeastern's James Fox and Mark Swatt, is that violence among this group is on the increase, even as violent crime in Boston in general is going down.
Between 2001 and 2007, the homicide rate among blacks in Boston, aged 14-24, increased from 36 to 64, or 78%, compared to a decrease among the comparable white group from 15 to 9, they report. Across Massachusetts, the homicide rate among blacks, 14-24, increased 98% (the homicide rate among comparable whites also increased, but by 17%, so that more young blacks now die violently in Massachusetts than

Two women shot outside Dorchester bar

Boston Police report two women were shot early this morning outside a bar at Columbia Rd. and Stoughton St. in Dorchester.
Both victims managed to get themselves to Boston Medical Center, police say:
The victim stated that they were walking out the bar at the above location when they heard three to four gunshots coming from an unknown direction. One of the victims, a 31-year old woman, then told officer that she next felt a burning sensation in her back and her suspicions were confirmed by her friend. The other victim, a 22-year old woman, reported the same facts except for the fact that her knee was grazed by a bullet.

Friends don't let friends carry box cutters

Boston Police report that when two drinking buddies got into an argument at 7 Fernboro St. in Dorchester early Saturday morning, one guy tried to make a point - with the sharp implement, possibly a box cutter, he allegedly plunged into the other guy.
As officers approached the suspect, officers noted the suspect had blood on his face and clothing. When asked about the stabbing, the suspect stated, "I was there but I didn't stab anyone."
The victim was taken to Boston Medical Center with what police said was not a life-threatening stab wound. William White, 27, of Boston, was taken to the nearest police station for booking on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

And, no, not the mall you were thinking of: The Salem News reports four people were arrested Thursday evening after what police say may have been a gang-related fight at the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers - in which one alleged thug was armed with a hammer and another with a wrench:
Danvers police Sgt. David Joyce said that every available officer on duty went to the mall in response to a call from mall security around 9 p.m. The mall was crowded with holiday shoppers, Joyce said.

Two men were arrested in connection with a bizarre string of events in Somerville Wednesday evening that ended with a car crash at the Twin City Mall. Somerville police officials said it all began when shots were fired from a car on School Street near Maple Street around 5:45 p.m. When police tried to pull over a suspect vehicle in the area of 226 Pearl Street a chase ensued. Police chased the car toward Cambridge before it eventually crashed into a fence at the Twin City Plaza. The driver then tried to back up and hit a police cruiser several times before him and a passenger were both arrested. Police arrested 22-year-old Richard Verrocchi and 27-year-old Richard MacDonald. Both were charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, failing to stop for police, unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

Man sought for the murder of Daniel Yakovleff

Authorities are now hunting for Steven Odegard, 41, for the stabbing death of Daniel Yakovleff in Dorchester on Jan. 17.
Odegard, in whose bed Yakovleff was found, was indicted by a Suffolk Superior Court grand jury yesterday, District Attorney Dan Conley and Police Commissioner Ed Davis said in a statement, adding that, based on the evidence collected over the past ten months:
Odegard retrieved a knife from his own kitchen and stabbed Yakovleff multiple times, killing him.
Police went to Odegard's current Dorchester Avenue apartment this morning, but Odegard had already fled.
Sleazy thug gets life for murdering Bible-studying cabbie

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted Cleveland "Sleazy" Martin of first-degree murder for the death of Brookline cabbie Heureur Previlon in 2005, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
Prosecutors successfully made the case that Martin and Jashawn Robinson - who is still awaiting trial - killed Previlon for his fare money on Aug. 25, 2005. The two made a point of calling a Brookline cab for a trip from Cleveland Circle to Monestery Road because they knew Brookline cabs did not have a partition between the passenger and driver's seats, unlike Boston cabs - and brought kitchen knives wrapped in alumnium foil so as not to leave fingerprints
Alleged Dorchester murderer surrenders

Steven Odegard, wanted for the murder of Daniel Yakovleff in January, turned himself in at the District 11 police station late last night and will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court today, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
The arraignment is scheduled for 2 p.m. so that Yakovleff's family from Connecticut can attend the hearing.
Odegard, in whose bed Yakovleff's body was found, was indicted Monday on charges he repeatedly stabbed Yakovleff with a kitchen knife after meeting up at a South End club.
Women out late at night targeted by criminal cabbies

Boston Police report five incidents since October involving women who say they were attacked or raped by taxi and limo drivers between 11:50 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., most recently, the case of the Northeastern student picked up and allegedly raped in a cabbie's van on Dec. 7.
Two of the incidents involved women picked up in Park Plaza; the others were in Uphams Corner, on Atlantic Avenue and in Saugus (the Northeastern student). In two cases, the victims gave similar descriptions: A man, 5'8" and speaking with a foreign accent (in one of those cases, the woman described the driver as "Middle Eastern," in the other, she described him as "tan").
Police say women should avoid walking alone late at night, should not wear high heels, shouldn't accept rides from men in non-Boston cabs or personal vehicles and should never sit in the front seat. Also: Car keys make a useful weapon.

Teen pleads guilty to South End beating

Prosecutors say Jordan Lyttle, 18, of Roxbury, beat Qumane Willams so hard the teen lost vision in one eye - six weeks before Williams was shot to death. By pleading guilty today, Lyttle was sentenced to two years in a county jail, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, which had sought a sentence of seven to ten years in a state prison.

The Providence Journal reports Anthony Parrish, 24, of Dorchester, was gunned down outside Club Passion in Providence around 2:30 a.m., Sunday.
In 2004, Parrish was acquitted of charges he gunned down Darrel Vilifana Noriega outside the former Fundonzinho Lounge on Dudley Street in Roxbury. He was later charged with putting a gun to the head of a witness in the case.

Man Arrested In Violent Somerville RobberiesSOMERVILLE (WBZ) ― Somerville police arrested a man they believe to be responsible for a series of violent robberies in Somerville and Cambridge. In each case a woman was robbed at knifepoint.Vincent Anthony Primo, 40 of Medford, was arrested late Saturday, along with his girlfriend Kim Marie Szathmary, 41 of Somerville. WBZ's Bill Shields spoke with one of Primo's alleged victims on Monday. "I struggled with him, and I wasn't severely injured, but to hear what he did to the others, especially with the drug record," said "Joanne" as she described what happened when she was attacked last week. "It was very surreal, and I'm just happy that I'm OK… That I got away from him without any injuries." Primo is charged in three armed robberies in Somerville last week, and is being investigated for four others in Cambridge. "Each one of the attacks, he used a knife or a screw driver to make that threat," explained Somerville Police Captain Charles Femino. In one robbery last Monday, Primo is accused of stabbing a woman in the chest. He faces additional charges for allegedly robbing a second woman that same day, and robbing another woman on Wednesday. Police say Primo would give Szathmary the stolen credit cards after the alleged robberies. She allegedly maxed out one victim's credit card buying bags-full of electronics. Primo has been arrested 38 times in his life and has been convicted over a dozen times

Boston Police report they are looking for a blonde woman driving a silver car in connection with an armed robbery at a VFW Parkway gas station last night and two earlier, botched holdups at the Walgreen's on Centre Street and the Dunkin' Donuts at Spring Street and VFW Parkway.
Police say the woman's not-all-that-successful spree began around 10:13 p.m. when she entered the Walgreen's at 1391 Centre St., and demanded money and drugs, but failed to get away with anything because store employees who had just closed up for the night couldn't open the safe, police say. Cambridge Police report on a mugging at Sparks and Brattle streets around 6 p.m. yesterday:
He demanded the tote bag that she had on her shoulder. When she became hesitant about giving him the bag, he raised up what appeared to be a silver tire iron and demanded the bag. Observing the tire iron, she gave him the bag.
The suspect is described as a white male in his late 20s.

Two women kidnapped, attacked in separate incidents

MassMostWanted reports Hanover Police are looking for a guy, who goes by the names "Magnetic Mack" and Raymond, in connection with a kidnapping around 1 a.m. on Dec. 3 on Hinckley Street in Dorchester:
She said that he put her into his m/v, a newer model white Chevy impala unknown reg. The victim says the pictured male subject robbed her and assaulted her. He finally let her go ion rt. 53 in Hanover.
Meanwhile, the Huntington News reports Saugus Police arrested a Boston man on charges he kidnapped and raped a Northeastern student on Sunday:
The 20-year-old student repeatedly opened and closed a van door as the suspect drove down Route 1 in Saugus in front of a patrol car at about 3:00 a.m, said Lieutenent Mike Annese from the Saugus Police Department. This prompted police to pull the van over.
Faisel Abdi Ibrahim, 36, now faces a variety of charges. The Lynn Daily Item reports Ibrahim offered the woman a ride in Boston, then drove her to Saugus, where he raped her. He was ordered held without bail in Lynn District Court yesterday.

David reports on the Cambridge PD's move to East Cambridge and notes that on Friday, as movers were getting stuff out of the old Central Square building, his apartment a couple blocks away was broken into (they didn't touch the wine, though):

I have to wonder if this doesn't signal a downturn in the fortunes of Central Square, long among the least desirable of Cambridge's major named squares, often fighting a reputation for grittiness. Police say teens followed man home from Savin Hill T stop, then mugged, beat him

Boston Police report that when officers saw a man clutching his face, standing on a Savin Hill Avenue porch right after seeing three guys running toward Dorchester Avenue, they figured there was a connection.
According to police, the man noticed three guys following him as he walked home from the T stop shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday:
The victim further stated hat he made it home and was about to close his front door when he heard someone say, "Yo Yo!" The victim, thinking it was a friend, slightly opened the front door to the building when he noticed the same three suspects that had been followed him from the T station on his porch. The victim attempted to shut the door but was overpowered by the suspects who forced their way into the building. The victim reported that the suspects upon forcing their way into the building started punching him and knocked him to the ground. The victim reported that one of the three suspects held him while the others repeatedly assaulted him and went though his pockets.
Fortunately, the man's brother heard the commotion, came downstairs and the three fled. And police nabbed Lionel Ighodaro, 18, Angelo Pina, 17, and Jamayl E. Wilson, 17 all of Dorchester and charged them with assault with intent to rob and breaking and entering in the nighttime.

Boston Police report that when a woman was mugged at St. Alphonsus and Tremont streets in Roxbury around 6:44 p.m. on Sunday, alert witnesses were able to give responding officers enough information on the alleged robber's getaway car to track him down to his home in Dorchester.

Jimmy L. Caldwell, 35, of Dorchester was arrested and charged with unarmed robbery and concealing stolen goods. No word if he was clad in green tights.

Man shot in head when guy drops gun by accident

Boston Police report on an incident at Stash's Restaurant, 612 Blue Hill Ave. in Dorchester shortly after 11 last night:
Witnesses say the victim was standing next to the suspect when the suspect's firearm fell to the ground and discharged. When the firearm discharged, the victim was struck in the head. Seeing this, the suspect fled the establishment. Witnesses describe the suspect as a black male, in his early 20s, with braided hair wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. The victim was immediately transported to the Boston Medical Center where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Two Sleeping Beauties awoken, but not with a kiss

Boston Police report a Harbor Point Boulevard teen was startled when she went to get breakfast around 6:15 this morning and found some dude asleep on her family's living-room couch:
Officers entered the location and observed the male still sound asleep on the couch. Officers woke the suspect and asked him to explain why he was sleeping on a couch in an apartment that didn't belong to him. The suspect stated that he thought he was sleeping in his friend's apartment. However, the owner of the apartment stated that he had no idea who the suspect was and they were definitely not friends.
After noticing the fragrance of something that might have been the remains of a poisoned apple (or a fermented one), police say, officers arrested Dominic D'Allesandro, 18, of Weymouth, on a charge of breaking and entering in the nighttime.
Earlier, around 1:15 a.m., police were called to 325 E. Eagle St. in East Boston, where they found a car running with a guy asleep at the wheel. Repeated efforts to rouse him failed, so officers called in EMTs, who did manage to wake the guy - who promptly began punching and slapping the EMTs, police say.
Antonio Valdivieso, 28, of East Boston was charged with OUI and assault and battery on a police officer and an EMT.

Police: Limo-riding goons smash two with bare fists, brass knuckles

Boston Police report on a brawl outside Faneuil Hall early this morning that left one man unconscious, one with a broken nose and four under arrest.
Police say the melee began around 2:15 at North and Union streets:
According to witnesses, a white limo pulled up to the victims and five to six individuals exited the car and proceeded to punch and kick the victims. Witnesses say the suspects then re-entered the limo and fled the area.

Police say they caught up with the limo on Soldiers Field Road:
Officers quickly noted that four of the occupants appeared as if they had been involved in some sort of physical altercation. Specifically, officers observed and noted that the suspects in question had among other things: bloodied, swollen knuckles, ripped clothing and clothing with blood on it. A search of the car enabled officers to locate a pair of brass knuckles.
Arrested and charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon: James King, 26, of Middletown, RI, Chris Kilroy, 26, of Newport, RI, Dewey Guntar, 25, of Charlestown, RI and Jeremy Schmidt, 29, of Amesbury.

Beware of strange men offering you a great deal on a mezuzah

Brookline Police report two residents of 2 Strathmore Rd. had their mezuzahs stolen sometime late Sunday or early Friday.
One was described as having a mahogany base with a silver colored star in the center; the other was described as having a bronze, woven pattern with green gem stones. Both have an estimated value of $150.
Police make arrest in 1984 murder

Boston Police today charged an Atlanta resident with beating and strangling a Roxbury woman to death almost 24 years ago.
Sultan Omar Chezulu, now 60, was arrested in Georgia today and will be transported back to Boston to face a charge of murdering Elsie "Yolanda" Hernandez sometime between the time she left work on Washington Street in Roxbury on Dec. 28, 1984 and the time her body was found amidst garbage between Shawmut Avenue and Washington Street the next day.
Police Commissioner Ed Davis says Chezulu, who actually lived in Boston - and Boston-area jails - until 2004, was tracked down by his department's Unsolved Case Squad and investigators from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office - who used DNA to track him down.
Roslindale food-delivery guy robbed at gunpoint

Wicked Local Roslindale reports a delivery person for Checkmate Cafe was robbed around 10 p.m. on Dec. 1 at what turned out to be a vacant house at 609 South St. The gunman got away with several hundred dollars in cash, a cell phone, two Philly cheese-steak subs and an order of fries.

Boston Police report a 50-year-old man was found inside 710 Hyde Park Ave. with a gunshot wound around 1 a.m. today. He was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The house is owned by a former leader of the Nigerian Advocacy Group for Democracy and Human Rights. Police did not say if there was a connection.

Police: Once again, Dorchester thuglets celebrate attack at Boston Bowl

Boston Police report a man was walking down Freeport Street shortly before 8 p.m. yesterday when he noticed four guys following him:
The victim stated that he attempted to escape from the suspects but they chased him, and surrounded him. According to the victim, once the suspects surrounded him, one of them pulled out a knife and demanded that he give them everything he had on him. The victim reported that the suspects went through his pockets after he gave them his cell phone then they fled on foot in the direction of Morrissey Boulevard.
While officers were interviewing him, a security officer at Boston Bowl called police to say he had two of the suspects. Police nabbed them and then, shortly after, nabbed the other two at Victory Road and Everdeen Street.
The four were aged between 13 and 16; all were charged with armed robbery.
A couple weeks ago, Boston Police nabbed two other alleged teen thugs at the bowling alley after they allegedly mugged a guy at gunpoint on Tenean Beach.

Jeremy Smith Dolan, 24, of Jamaica Plain, was charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime, assault by means of a dangerous weapon and trespassing following the 10:56 p.m. incident at 151 Terrace St. in Roxbury, Boston Police report.
